Which end you are at decides everything. Onto sealed hardstand near the port this is about as simple as our work gets: nothing overhead and nothing to thread through. The old village is the opposite — tight frontages, low verandah roofs, big old figs over the verge, and service wires that look higher than they are until a sidelifter puts its legs out. Off the sealed ground it is mostly sand, and sand under a loaded truck is its own kind of trouble, so an existing slab or compacted pad is usually the sensible spot. A crane truck will lift one over a fence or down a side access where nothing else fits, which is worth establishing when you enquire rather than on the day. Being at the mouth, we will also ask about level and exposure before anything else, and every unit goes up on blocks or pavers regardless. Steel sheds rain from overhead; it does not hold back a tide.
The general rule everywhere: firm level ground, roughly 20m of straight run for a tilt-tray or 30m of working room for a sidelifter, and nothing overhead.
